Whats it like to be a regular student???

Over the last couple of days my schedule has went from rough to ridiculous. From 2 study halls (my first from 12-2 and my second from 7-9) everyday, to official practice from 3-6. Sometimes i just wonder what it would be like to be a regular student.
No one checking your classes, no one making you go to class, no 6am lifts. Just a regular student, and all i had to worry about was my school work. Now I'm not throwing a pity party for my self, this is what i signed up for and if i didn't love it i would not do it, but sometimes i wonder how my grades would be so much better if i was a regular student. i just wonder how much more sleep i would be getting if i was a regular student. And whats so hard about being a regular student? We take the same class with the same load regular students do.....just some thoughts

I COMPLETELY AGREE!! I think about this all the time. It REALLY bothers me when i hear "regular students" say "oh I'm sooo tired today." I am just so bitter! What are you tired from? parting to hard? You can sleep whenever you want!! What makes me even more mad is when regular students think we have it easier. NO. Not only do we have all the same work load as they do BUT we have million hour practices a day. we work not one job, but two. But hey, I wouldn't give it up for the world. And I know you wouldn't either. And that is why you are my boy!

  2. Well coming from a regular student's point of view I would say that first if it wasnt for basketball do you think you would be in this school?? If you didnt have an amazing talent do you think this university would have granted you access?? And yes you do go through hell with work outs and everything else but you have to include the good with the bad. Include that you all get free clothes, tuition, tutoring, and so much more. A regular student has to worry about passing classes while wondering how they are going to pay for this expensive school. A regular student walks around campus thinking about the job they have to go to after classes. A regular student has to motivate themselves to do their school work without study halls or people telling them to do their work. Its not as easy as you think it is for "regular" students at this school, we dont have all of the resources that you guys do. None of us are regular students, every student at UVA has either a special sport talent or they have worked extremely hard in high school to get into this prestigious college, or they have done both. My time here is not that much easier than yours, TRUST ME.

  3. I agree with tristan and lexie. Like to be a student athlete at this school is not easy at all. You feel like you are always tired and never getting a chance to catch sleep. I understand being a regular student is not easy because of the work load at UVA but we do all the same work. For example my practice yesterday we had to run 6 miles, play for 45 minutes and than lift weights. Than weare expected to go to study hall and get work done. Do you think regular students can handle that? If we were to switch schedules i could handle your schedule but i do not think you will be able to handle mine. As you said some athletes would not get into this school with their athletic ability. Which makes the work so much harder for us. The work that you find easy we work twice as hard just to understand it.

  4. i Agree. the work load is rough for anyone but adding on top of a full day of school are workout schedule is 10 times as hard. There is no time to just relax. We are always on the go. study hall then class then workouts then study hall again. then next thing you know its 11pm and you gotta go to sleep and start all over again. And why does everybody think we have the easy life? I know for a fact that a regular student would not make it through 1 week of my schedule.

  5. Okay I understand that you guys have workouts and we dont but thats about it. We have study hall everyday, many times more than once or twice a day. Studying is part of being a student here and if you dont do it then you will FAIL that is the same for EVERYONE. And I would just for you guys to take into account the many students that have jobs while going to school. The only difference between you and us is that you like your jobs you have enjoyed playing your sport for years and years but we have to go to a job that we HATE for hours on end and not get paid as much.

  6. How can you be bitter when this is the life that you chose? You know that once you get to college everything is different. I'm sure you didn't expect for practices to be the same in college as they were in highschool..if so then maybe you should sit down and re-think. I dont get the label of being a regular student. Clearly if your at UVA you are not just a regular student and as far as partying goes athletes have wayyyyy more connections to party then us "regular" students. There are consequences in anything that you do so as far as not going to class, we may not have someone to check up on us but we still have to maintain a grade and not going to class may lower our grade. Maybe its easier to have someone baby you and say you need to go to class its like having the mother at college that the rest of us "regular" students don't have. So if you would like to be a regular student drop basketball which you are so passionate about and pick up a 16 credit semester course load and then see how easy us "regular" students have it.

  7. First off i knew this was going to be hard. Second i love how everyone assumes that Athletes are stupid and can only get in because of the sport we play. Third YES WE DO HAVE IT WORSE, PERIOD. Yea yea yea we know yall have such a hard work schedule but the thing your missing is SO DO WE! Plus we have to keep up with our practices and workouts. Plus our Job is way harder than any regular Job. At your regular job you don't have people watching your every move, blogging about you, watching what messages you put up on facebook. Being an athlete makes you grow up faster. It forces you to have to not be a alil kid anymore, because you never know whose watching.

  8. Wow! Hot topic!

Ok, so we have some different perspectives out there. I think this is a great example of how it is hard to be objective when your personal experience is so involved. Are we overpersonalizing here?

Is there a larger issue here that we can locate in the middle of this binary opposition?

  9. To give another perspective, I respect that athletes have a grueling schedule, but I think this post does not give “regular” students enough credit. Those of us who are athletes work just as hard as athletes, but in different ways. We did not get into UVA on athletic scholarships; this is not to say that we are smarter than athletes, but to remind athletes that there are different expectations required of us. We don’t have an athletic scholarship to fall back on—if we do not do well academically, there will be less mercy on us. Although we do not have to go to practices or study halls, we are still required to study for challenging classes if we want to succeed at this school. Also, non-athletes are usually involved in clubs and activities outside of the classroom. Personally, I am involved in three different extracurricular activities outside of my studies, and those commitments take up a lot of my valuable time and energy. In addition, many of us also have late nights where we are up studying or finishing homework; we don’t always get to decide when we will go to bed.

An argument was made that the work here is easier for us, but I beg to differ—just because a person is intelligent does not mean that he or she magically knows the answer to every question or concept that we are required to be familiar with in our courses.

  10. Well in point of view as a regular student, I would say you still probably get the same amount of sleep mainly because most regular students have to get jobs in order to pay for this school. So i think that athletes and regular students have just about the same workload. Considering the fact that every day aside from stressing over school work i have to stress over whether I have enough money to pay for this school.Last week i spent 1:30 almost every day at Financial Aid.

  11. Tristan i understand you a 100%. It does not make sense to argue, but just no if we was to switch places with regular students they could not survive the work load we have. Simple.
