checkn in

Hey just checkn back in. We just got back from fall break so I got a chance to go home for about 3 days. It was good seeing them my two little sisters mean a lot to me (jasmine-12, jade-7).One thing that I truly miss is my moms cooking! With me being the oldest it feels weird not being around, but they know how much I love them so they’ll be fine. We finish up workouts soon then we start full on practice. Our team looks very sharp. Coach has us playing tough hard nose defense every workout. The college game is so much faster than high school but you learn to adjust quickly. Me and my roommate Jontel just got cable in out room so life Is pretty good. Classes aren’t too rough. Startn to get use to my schedule even though it seems like it chances everyday with tutor times and study hall. I got a chance to see that Monday night game between green bay and Minnesota, it was a classic. I’m a big football fan my team is Carolina, we play the redskins next weekend hopefully we can get a win.

  1. Tristan,
Sounds like it was a good thing to have a chance to go home and be with your family! You do sound like you are settling in to the college student athlete life here at UVa. That's great!
What are you thinking about writing your research paper on?
    Any ideas percolating?

  2. I Really don't know. I have a couple ideas, due to my sports Talk class. for example, should high school basketball players have to go to college? And if so who makes this rule stand?

  3. Yes, writing about the transition from high school sports to college and pro, would be an excellent topic to research. You might dig around in this for awhile and see what jumps out at you as interesting.

  4. I really like this topic but is it to broad? How would i narrow it down more?

  5. Trist!
Sounds like you had a great time a home. I'm very jealous becuase I didn't get to go home. I'm starting to get to know my schedule really well too. Coach Bennet seems like a great coach and I'm happy to know that Coach is pushing defense hard on you guys. defense wins games!!

  6. Hi Tristen,
Thanks for coming by my office today. It was good to talk with you.
If you research and talk to others about the transition from high school to college as a student athlete, some stories and ideas will come up. If you write down these ideas and stories, you will remember them. That is part of the prewriting stage of research. From this list, you can consider other ideas related and keep brainstorming on the large topic. Something compelling will come up and that is the direction you take.

I am thinking about what Lexie said in her comment: Defense wins the game! Maybe the lessons of good defense are what takes a student athlete to the next level. What ARE the lessons of good defense and how do they relate to being a student?
